SRINAGAR, AUGUST 29: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday paid solemn tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, the legendary hockey player, on the occasion of National Sports Day and highlighted the transformative role of sports in shaping disciplined, resilient and united youth.
Recalling Major Dhyan Chand’s legendary performances, Sinha described him as one of India’s most enduring symbols of sporting excellence, whose brilliance made the world acknowledge the country’s immense sporting talent.
In his address, the Lieutenant Governor said every stroke of Major Dhyan Chand’s hockey stick symbolised discipline, dedication and willpower. He emphasised that sports are not merely about winning medals but about cultivating resilience, unity and the spirit of nation-building.
“Sport is life’s most honest teacher. The playing field never lies; rather, it tells you precisely where you stand today and what you must do to become better tomorrow. There are no shortcuts in sports. Even on the hockey turf, there is no place for excuses. There is only hard work, opportunity, and a test of your character,” he said.
Sinha said sports cultivate the fundamental strength required for nation-building and produce young people who learn how to rise after setbacks and work towards victory.
Highlighting the role of youth, the Lieutenant Governor said sports give wings to dreams and expressed confidence in the young athletes of Jammu and Kashmir, describing them as the bright future of India.
He envisioned a future where every Gram Panchayat harnesses the power of sports, academies in small towns nurture talent, and athletes from rural backgrounds receive access to the same scientific training available at Centres of Excellence in major cities.
The Lieutenant Governor also underlined the importance of sports science, management and technical expertise in universities and institutions to create a strong pool of trainers, physiotherapists and sports managers.
He expressed hope that Jammu and Kashmir would not only participate in international sporting events but also host them, showcasing the region’s talent to the world.
“It is a resolve filled with infinite possibilities. Our achievements in sports over the past six years prove that if young people are prepared for sports with dedication, the region will create an entire era of champions,” Sinha said.
Calling upon the youth to contribute towards building Viksit Bharat by 2047, the Lieutenant Governor stressed that champions are forged through discipline, sweat and sustained effort rather than shortcuts.
He urged corporate houses to support athletes at the stage of talent identification and development instead of waiting until they have already won medals. He said society, coaches, support staff and parents all have a collective responsibility in shaping champions.
Sinha outlined three duties for the youth: to lead by example, compete with dignity, accept defeat gracefully and inspire future generations.
He also called upon young people to use the unity of sports to transcend differences of language and faith and urged them to give back to society by guiding and mentoring the next generation.
The Lieutenant Governor commended the youth for their participation in the Drug-Free Campaign and said their efforts were setting an example for the nation.
