JAMMU, AUGUST 4: The Red Ribbon Club and NSS Wing of Government College for Women (GCW), Bhagwati Nagar, in collaboration with the Rotary Club Jammu, organised an awareness programme on menstrual hygiene and drug de-addiction to promote health, hygiene and a drug-free lifestyle among students.
The programme was held under the guidance of Principal Shalini Sharma.
Welcoming the gathering, Dr. Pavanjeet Bali, Nodal Officer of the Red Ribbon Club, greeted the Principal, members of the Rotary Club, faculty and students. In her inaugural address, Principal Shalini Sharma highlighted the Rotary Club’s contribution towards social welfare and humanitarian service. She said the organisation has played a significant role in encouraging ethical values, community service and peace, while motivating students to actively contribute towards the welfare of underprivileged sections of society.
The programme focused on creating awareness about menstrual hygiene, breaking myths and social stigma associated with menstruation, and encouraging healthy practices among young women. Speakers stressed the importance of using safe menstrual products, maintaining personal hygiene and ensuring scientific disposal of sanitary waste for better health and environmental sustainability.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Shivani Choudhary, who spoke on the importance of menstrual health and hygiene. She emphasised that awareness, access to sanitary facilities and the removal of social taboos are essential for ensuring the health and dignity of women. She also underlined the need for safe disposal of sanitary products and greater community support.
Motivational speakers Dr. Dushyant Choudhary, Rotarian Harish Gulati and Rotary Club Jammu President Prof. Ranjeet Jamwal highlighted the organisation’s community initiatives and encouraged students to join the club as Rotaractors to participate in social service activities under the mentorship of Rotary members.
A special session on drug de-addiction sensitised participants about the harmful effects of substance abuse on physical, mental and social well-being. The resource person urged students to make informed decisions, adopt healthy lifestyles and contribute towards building a drug-free society by serving as ambassadors of awareness.
On the occasion, the Rotary Club Jammu donated a sanitary napkin vending machine and a sanitary napkin incinerator to the college. The initiative is expected to improve access to menstrual hygiene products and facilitate their safe and environmentally responsible disposal on the campus.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, NSS volunteers, Red Ribbon Club members and representatives of the Rotary Club.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Preeti Salathia, Programme Officer, NSS, who appreciated the joint efforts of the Red Ribbon Club, NSS Wing and Rotary Club in organising the awareness programme.
