JAMMU, JULY 31: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Friday launched the nationwide ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign under the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari (JSJB) initiative by laying the foundation stone for a rooftop rainwater harvesting structure at Government High School, Gandhi Nagar.

JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav inaugurated the initiative and said the campaign aims to promote water conservation through large-scale rainwater harvesting across educational institutions and public buildings.

Addressing students and teachers, the Commissioner described rainwater harvesting as a sustainable solution for conserving water and recharging groundwater. He said rainwater falling on school rooftops, which is often wasted through drains and nallahs, will now be channelled through specially designed pipelines to replenish the groundwater table.

He announced that more than 1,000 rooftop rainwater harvesting structures will be developed in schools under the campaign. Similar structures will also be installed in government buildings, while rainwater harvesting will be made mandatory for all new building permissions issued by the Jammu Municipal Corporation.

The Commissioner urged students to become ambassadors of water conservation and play an active role in spreading awareness about the importance of preserving water resources. He also interacted with the students and distributed sweets among them.

During the programme, students and teachers were sensitised about the importance of water conservation and the role of rainwater harvesting in ensuring a sustainable future.

All participants took a pledge to conserve water and support the ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign, reaffirming their commitment to protecting water resources for future generations.

The month-long campaign will feature awareness programmes, community outreach activities and the promotion of rainwater harvesting practices across Jammu city as part of the nationwide initiative.
