LG calls for responsible, inclusive tourism to ensure benefits reach every household

SRINAGAR, July 27: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday called for redefining tourism in Jammu and Kashmir as a shared responsibility towards nature, culture and society, stressing that sustainable and inclusive tourism should ensure equitable benefits for local communities while preserving the region’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Addressing the Ethical Tourism Conclave organised by the Tourist Trade Interest Guild, J&K, the Lieutenant Governor said ethical tourism should serve as the guiding principle for the future development of the sector.
Congratulating the organisers, Sinha described the conclave as a significant initiative aimed at promoting responsible tourism. Referring to the theme, “Responsible Today, Sustainable Tomorrow, Beneficial for All,” he said it reflected the collective responsibility of society to protect the environment and cultural heritage for future generations.
The Lieutenant Governor said Jammu and Kashmir has long been recognised for its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, adding that tourism should celebrate and preserve this legacy.
Highlighting the progress made by the tourism sector in recent years, Sinha said Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed record tourist arrivals, increased investments and expanded employment opportunities. However, he maintained that the true measure of success lies in ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach every household and contribute to the socio-economic development of local communities.
Emphasising the need for inclusive growth, the Lieutenant Governor said tourism should empower boatmen, pony owners, artisans, homestay operators and local youth by providing dignified livelihoods and equal opportunities. He said the gains from tourism should not remain limited to large businesses but should extend to every stakeholder associated with the sector.
Calling for environmentally responsible tourism, Sinha stressed the importance of protecting forests, lakes, rivers and other natural resources while pursuing infrastructure development. He said development and conservation must go hand in hand to safeguard the ecological balance of the region.
The Lieutenant Governor also urged tourism stakeholders and visitors to adopt eco-friendly practices, including avoiding single-use plastics, ensuring proper waste management, conserving water and energy and respecting wildlife.
He observed that sustainable tourism can only be achieved when environmental protection, community participation and economic development progress together, adding that collective efforts are essential to ensure prosperity reaches the last village, the last family and every citizen across Jammu and Kashmir.
