Italy imposes temporary border checks on non-EU arrivals from Spain
ROME, AUGUST: Italy has temporarily suspended parts of the Schengen border arrangements with Spain following a sharp increase in migrant arrivals into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, introducing targeted checks on non-European Union nationals entering Italy from Spain.
The Italian government clarified that the one-month measure would not affect Spanish citizens or other European Union nationals travelling to Italy. Instead, additional border checks will apply only to non-EU nationals arriving from Spain by air or sea.
Rome said the decision was prompted by a sudden surge in migrant crossings into Ceuta, a Spanish territory on Morocco’s northern coast that serves as one of the European Union’s main entry points from Africa.
Thousands of migrants reportedly entered Ceuta by land and sea within a single day, prompting Spanish and Moroccan authorities to strengthen border control measures.
The move has drawn criticism from opposition leaders in Italy, who described it as largely symbolic. Critics argued there was no evidence that migrants arriving in Ceuta intended to travel onwards to Italy and accused Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government of using the measure to project a tough stance on illegal immigration.
Opposition lawmaker Piero De Luca termed the decision a political move aimed at appealing to anti-immigration voters rather than addressing the migration challenge.
The Schengen Agreement allows passport-free travel across most European Union countries but permits temporary border controls in exceptional circumstances, including security threats and migration pressures.
Italian authorities said the suspension is limited in duration and scope and will remain in force for one month, after which the government will decide whether to extend, modify or withdraw the additional checks.
The development highlights continuing concerns within Europe over migration routes through North Africa and renewed debate over border management within the Schengen area.
